You’ve been feeling a lack of peace in your spirit, a tightness in your chest or a fogginess in your mind because you feel confused. Maybe you’ve been dragging yourself out of bed because you’ve been feeling a complete lack of motivation or purpose.
If you’ve been this person and you’re wondering how to find peace, then you’re exactly the person that I created this for.
There have been many occasions over the past decade since moving to the U.S. where I felt a complete lack of peace. I remember laying on the floor in my bathroom in my Chicago apartment weekend after weekend, begging God to just give me peace.
Over the years, I’ve worked to develop a deeper understanding of myself and of how I can access my own source of peace – no matter what is going on around me. Today, I want to share with you some insights and ideas of how to find peace in times of uncertainty.
If you’re keen to dive even deeper into this topic, check out my previous blog post about having faith in yourself despite doubts. Also, come check out my Youtube channel for more content! I release new videos every Thursday.
So how can you find peace in times of uncertainty?
1. Firstly, you have to remember that in the midst of uncertainty, there is always something that is certain.
There is a place that exists inside of you. It’s a place of lightness and calmness that you have access to whenever you need it. And the only real way to access this place of calm is to let go and to stop trying.
You stop trying to find comfort outside of yourself. Whether it’s the comfort of stable work, a successful business or relationship, or even friendship. If you think that there’s something that you have to do or achieve in order to find peace, just let go of that idea. Recognize that the source of calmness exists inside of you.
Perhaps the one thing that you can count on is inside you. It’s the one thing that is certain.
2. Instruct yourself to feel lightly.
A few days ago I woke up and I was feeling really heavy. I had this feeling of heaviness that was weighing on my spirit because, once again, I was questioning whether I was really fulfilling my purpose the way that I believe that I’m meant to be.
So I got up and I walked around to the bay in the back of the apartment block that we live in. I just sat on the edge of the water and I realized that the feeling of heaviness in my spirit was not allowing me to have peace. Even in this beautiful, serene, peaceful place that I was sitting.
So I whispered to myself, “Feel lightly, Candis, only lightness. Feel lightly, feel lightly”. I breathed and I let go of the heaviness. As my spirit began to lighten, it made way for peace and clarity.
3. Ask for a sign.
So then I thought I’d take it a step further and I asked God.
“Alright, please give me a sign that I’m headed in the right direction.”
Almost immediately, a dolphin jumped up out of the water in front of me! It swam in spirals, up and down the bay for almost 15 minutes.
In my three years that I’ve lived in Miami Beach, that’s the first time that I’ve seen a dolphin in the bay. I heard a voice at that point, it was in my mind and it just said. “Follow the dolphin”.
When I went back to my apartment, I googled ‘What does a dolphin symbolize and what does it mean when you see one?’ And this is what I read.
“Are you drowning in heavy emotions and need to come up for air? Have you forgotten how to play? In watching a dolphin in nature it’s peaceful personality becomes obvious. There is no conflict with other animals or humans. The dolphin illustrates the emotion of water and the intellect of air in harmony. So as a dolphin swims into your life, you’ll begin to notice that your head and your heart seek balance.”
How beautiful is that? Ask and it is given.
So what’s your spirit animal? Let me know in the comments below.
4. To find peace in uncertain times, you have to learn how to be more playful.
During the hardest time in my life, struggles and disappointments in my marriage, setbacks in my business, or heaviness in my spirit, I’ve always been led back to fun.
The School of Womanly Arts a book written by Mama Gena talks about the power of pleasure and is one of my favorite reads. I can truly say that returning to fun and focusing on my own enjoyment has helped me to heal time and time again. It’s healed my marriage, my finances. It has helped calm my spirit and it’s repeatedly led me back to a place of peace.
So these days, whenever I lose my way, I’m always led back to fun. Even if it’s by way of a dolphin.
5. You have to journal your way to peace.
Find a still and quiet place to just get your thoughts onto paper. That’s always been therapeutic for me. I’ve found that often times, a lack of peace comes from confusion about where should I go and what I should do. I’m pondering over the right decision to make and the right steps to take.
Journaling has been this powerful practice that has allowed me to reconnect to that certain place inside of me. And I really hope that it can do the same for you.
To support you in your journey to find peace in times of uncertainty, I’m gifting you a 4-page guide with 57 self-discovery questions that you can use as journal prompts.
